GiSTEM is pleased to announce the addition of a new Sprinter Van to support its mission of expanding access to STEM-based opportunities across the Greater Richmond region. This investment was made possible through the generous support of the Smurfit Westrock Foundation to help strengthen GiSTEM’s commitment to preparing the future workforce by equipping young talent with the skills needed for success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) careers.

“Reliable transportation should never be a barrier to opportunity,” said Tammy Pollock, Smurfit Westrock Foundation advisor and regional vice president, Communications, Smurfit Westrock North America. “Through our investment, GiSTEM and the Smurfit Westrock Foundation are partnering to ensure more students can consistently access hands-on STEM programming that prepares them for in-demand careers and long-term success.”

The Sprinter Van will enhance program delivery and transportation for students at key initiatives including GiSTEM Week, GiSTEM Connects, GiSTEMpact activations such as Education Days and Thinking Big, and other community-based STEM experiences. It will also provide transportation so that college volunteers can support GiSTEM programs.
More than a vehicle, the GiSTEM Sprinter Van will function as a STEM mobile lab featuring modern technology and a flexible workspace. It will host hands-on challenges, demonstrations, and career exploration experiences, delivering STEM experiences directly to schools and local events. By meeting students where they are, GiSTEM aims to reduce barriers to access and spark curiosity in high-demand STEM fields.

“As GiSTEM enters its seventh year, this investment reflects our commitment to thinking big and acting boldly,” said LaToya Mayfield, President of GiSTEM. “We want every student to see themselves in STEM. This van helps us reach them wherever they are, making STEM engagement more accessible, relevant, and exciting for young people across Greater Richmond and beyond.”

The Sprinter Van initiative supports GiSTEM’s long-term vision to:
• Increase reach of students annually through direct program delivery
and transportation
• Expand access to more school districts
• Strengthen career exploration and readiness due to direct access
• Build sustainable partnerships with schools and corporations
• Increase engagement through interactive, hands-on STEM experiences
• Increase involvement in volunteering opportunities at GiSTEM
The Sprinter Van will make its first public appearance at Education Days at Kings Dominion on Friday, May 1, 2026. Sign up for our emails to find out when the mobile lab will launch.
