THE EXPERIENCE

The overarching purpose of GiSTEM’s Thinking Big Program is to expose youth to STEM-based careers and allow them to engage with industry professionals that are like them. This experience can significantly impact their desire to go into STEM-based careers in adulthood. The ability to pursue these careers tends to lead to more positive economic outcomes, such as higher median earnings and generational wealth in the Greater Richmond region. GiSTEM is on the journey of being the solution to creating a future workforce by equipping young talent with the skills for success in STEM-based careers.
"I think the highlight today is being able to introduce kids to the manufacturing sector to see them sort of interact with what we do and how we do it. It's been a really fun event and a great opportunity to meet a lot of people."

THINKING BIG 2027 -
Supply Chain, Transportation &
Logistics

Supply chain, transportation, and logistics keep our communities and economy moving. From the food we eat and products we purchase to medicine, technology, manufacturing, and e-commerce, these systems connect people, products, and businesses across Virginia, the United States, and the world.

Greater Richmond is uniquely positioned as a hub for supply chain, transportation, and logistics. The region is supported by major interstate highways, rail networks, air cargo facilities, and the Richmond Marine Terminal, providing access to approximately 45% of the U.S. population within a one-day delivery drive. According to the Greater Richmond Partnership, the region is also home to more than 53,000 workers employed in the supply chain industry

The workforce is evolving as technology transforms how products are planned, produced, tracked, and delivered. Nationally, employment for logisticians is projected to grow 18% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Careers across supply chain, transportation, and logistics increasingly rely on engineering, manufacturing, data analytics, artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, cybersecurity, and mathematics, creating growing opportunities for students with strong STEM foundations. As the industry continues to evolve, employers are seeking talent equipped to leverage technology, solve complex challenges, and optimize the movement of goods and services around the world.

Supply chain, transportation, and logistics are shaping the future workforce. Now is the time to help students see where they can be part of it.

Focus: Supply chain, transportation and logistics are rapidly evolving industries that require a skilled workforce to support growing economic and consumer demands. From manufacturing and warehousing to distribution, freight, and e-commerce, organizations are leveraging technology and data-driven solutions to improve efficiency, strengthen operations, and ensure products move seamlessly from source to consumer.
